Question marks are appearing over the future of Chris Smalling after the Roma defender was spotted talking to his agent at their English summer retreat.

The central defender barely featured last season due to a succession of injury problems and his contract only runs to the end of the current campaign.

The squad is currently in England with coach Daniele De Rossi to prepare for the new term with a series of friendly matches, beating Barnsley 4-0 already this week.

Smalling agent holds surprise meeting

According to Calciomercato.com, Smalling’s agent was spotted at the St George’s Park facilities today, where he spoke to the defender for some time before the afternoon session.

Roma are open to selling the defender, who turns 35 in November, and get his €3.5m net salary off the books.

He is not the only one on the way out, as Marash Kumbulla is in negotiations for a possible move to Parma.

The Giallorossi are linked with a few other alternatives, including Arthur Theate of Stade Rennais and Sevilla centre-back Loic Badé, but the asking price is around €20m for the latter.
