The Blues are facing somewhat of a dilemma after the news that Levi Colwill will miss the majority of the season with an ACL injury.

Chelsea are faced with a decision of trusting their current options or trying to find a solution in the final two weeks of the market.

Chelsea view Tosin as an elite defender

Enzo Maresca has stated more than once publicly he wants a new defender, but whether his wish is granted remains to be seen.

Colwill is so important to how the Blues play, and the only other player in the squad who is a central centre back on the ball is Tosin.

In more bad news Tosin is set to miss the Premier League opener against Crystal Palace, meaning Josh Acheampong will likely partner Trevoh Chalobah.

Tosin has become an important member of the squad since arriving on a free transfer from Fulham last season, and he’s one of the leaders in the group.

Given Colwill’s injury he’s set for a more important role this season, and Solhekol has reported the Blues view him inside the club as an elite defender with great leadership qualities.

Chelsea unlikely to sign a new centre back

Despite Maresca’s public pleas Chelsea’s stance on signing a new centre back before the end of the window reportedly hasn’t shifted.

The issue the Blues have is two of their options in Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana have shown they can’t stay fit for a prolonged period, whilst Acheampong is very inexperienced.

It would be a huge gamble, and one that could backfire, but it looks like Maresca will have to make it work with the current options in the squad.

Whether not getting a new centre back will sour relations between Maresca and the club is unknown, but it’s hard to imagine that being the case.
