The Hammers battled out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Kingsmeadow last time out. The East Londoners came from two goals down to claim an unlikely point against the Barclays Women’s Super League leaders.
West Ham United are enjoying a hugely progressive campaign and manager Skinner says that their good form is largely down to the increased competition in the squad.
“I’ve been really pleased with the players’ attitude and approach and training has been excellent,” Skinner said when speaking in a West Ham United press conference.
“We’ve added a couple of players in that have given us that extra edge and that’s helped us in different departments. It has always been about building blocks and chipping away at the process.
“Now that we’ve got everyone functioning and we’ve managed to fill some of the pieces of the jigsaw, it has allowed us to have a lot of belief and confidence in what we are doing and to be able to execute more regularly, knowing that we have subs that can also do that. The manoeuvrability of the squad has just been a lot better.
“It’s really competitive and everyone’s fit, keeping everyone on their toes. That’s important and it has led to us improving our capabilities of delivering that winning mentality and never say die attitude.
“It’s a work-in-progress but we are in a great space.”
West Ham United’s latest opponents Manchester United could yet win the Barclays Women’s Super League title while they are Adobe Women’s FA Cup finalists once again. Skinner says that her side will need to replicate their recent performance against Chelsea this afternoon.
She said “They’re a force to be reckoned with and the points on the board show that. They’re a tough team and we are expecting a really hard game.
“We had a positive game against Chelsea and we’ve got to do it again, that’s going to be really important for us in-front of our fans.
“It’ll be a tough test for sure.”
With four games remaining, there’s plenty to play for and Skinner is hoping for consistency in the final block.
She said “We want to finish the season strongly and we need to be consistent with that. It has taken us time and growth and a process to get to this point and we need to show that we can be competitive consistently through to the end of the season.
“When you look at the season overall, I’ve been really pleased with the performances in general. Even before Christmas, we were playing well, we just couldn’t quite get over the line with goals at times, little things that didn’t go our way.
“We’ve stuck at it which shows the character of the players. We have to take every single game seriously and we want to get as many points on the board as we can. That will tell me even more about the players if we can stick to that.”
West Ham United’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United kicks-off at 12pm. Tickets will be on-sale at The Chigwell Construction Stadium this afternoon.
