Sheffield Wednesday supporters have been forced to watch a number of players exit Hillsborough this summer due to Dejphon Chansiri’s financial woes - and one is already making his mark at his new club.

Djeidi Gassama was one of those stars to leave the Owls, with the 21-year-old sold to Rangers for a cut-price fee of £2.2 million, and has adapted to life at Ibrox immediately.

After coming off the bench and scoring in both legs against Panathinikos in the Champions League, Gassama started his first game in Europe’s premier competition against Viktoria Plzen, scoring a brace as Rangers won 3-0 as they continue to make waves in the qualifying rounds.

This has led to a mixed reaction from Wednesday supporters, who have no choice but to watch on as their former player excels on the global stage.

One of those is Football League World’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, Patrick McKenna, who believes that Chansiri’s financial mismanagement has forced the Owls to sell Gassama for an insulting amount.

“It is great to see Djeidi Gassama do so well,” Patrick told FLW.

“I've always said he has had the talent and potential, and I really hope he develops this and becomes a top player.

“But as a Sheffield Wednesday fan, it does hurt to see this happen.

"In a shambolic deal, we sold our key asset for almost nothing, what is £2.2 million in this day and age? The thing that really stings is that he was sold for the wrong reasons and under the wrong circumstances.

“We have an owner who simply can't afford to run the club. So, to desperately raise some funds instead of selling the club, he sold Gassama to the first bidder just so he could cover next month's wages. No thought process went into this deal.

“So, if Chansiri was any sort of businessman, Gassama would have developed further for Wednesday, and we could have made a huge profit on him like plenty of other Championship and even League One clubs have done. But no, unfortunately, none of this has happened with Gassama.

“As for a sell-on clause, I am absolutely certain that none exists. This was a deal done in a hurry as a money grab, and no thought would go into a sell-on clause. As I said, any sort of businessman would insist on it.

“But we're talking here about Chansiri. So, £2.2 million is all the club will get for him. Gassama will develop even further with Rangers; they are such a big club. It's not a transfer that will be forgotten.

“This whole thing just smacks up the incompetence of Dejphon Chansiri.”

Sheffield Wednesday should’ve made a much larger profit on Djeidi Gassama

The Owls acquired Gassama for a reported €1m fee in 2023 and have therefore made a profit on him.

However, at just 21 years of age, the forward has so much potential to develop into and has immediately proven that with his performances at Rangers.

It isn’t unreasonable to suggest that Wednesday could’ve sold Gassama for triple the £2.2 million amount Rangers paid in the future, but that is now no longer the case.

Chansiri has cost the Steel City side a great deal this summer, with missing out on a potential windfall in the form of Ibrox’s new hero one of his worst actions.
