In recent weeks, transfer rumours have emerged linking Paris Saint-Germain keeper Donnarumma to Inter.

There are a couple of factors behind these links.

Firstly, there is a sense that Inter may be in the market for a new keeper.

Right now, Yann Sommer is the Nerazzurri’s first-choice between the posts. However, he is 36, and he can hardly remain in the role for too much longer.

Meanwhile, Inter signed Josep Martinez from Genoa last summer. He is the player they’ve earmarked to be Sommer’s long-term heir, but has yet to really show that he can be so,

Then there is also the matter of Donnarumma’s contract situation.

At the moment, the 25-year-old is under contract with PSG until the end of June 2026.

Therefore, on paper, Donnarumma could be approaching a turning point.

The former AC Milan keeper could very well leave the French capital via the same route he came, on a free transfer. If he does not sign a new deal, that will be a possibility.

On the other hand, PSG could see this summer as their last chance to cash in. If Donnarumma doesn’t put pen to paper on an extension, he could be sold.

Inter are certainly a club with an eye for a free transfer opportunity. And Donnarumma would be a massive one.

And in the meantime, Nerazzurri Sporting Director Piero Ausilio was in a coy mood when asked about the links with the EURO 2020 winner.

Bot Donnarumma himself dismissed the links. “A lot of rumours are flying round,” he said.

“But I’m happy here,” the Paris Saint-Germain keeper insisted. “Everyone here loves me, everyone at the club respects me.”

“My priority is to extend my contract,” he added.
