For the Manchester United faithful, the prospect of going into a game without Bruno Fernandes on the pitch is unthinkable.

The skipper is enjoying yet another prolific campaign on all fronts, showcasing just why he has cemented his status among the absolute best of the best midfielders in world football.

Fernandes has always been Mr Reliable for United, but amidst such a torrid time like they’ve endured this season, fans can only question where on earth the side would be had he not been available every week.

In fact, you’d struggle to find a player who pulls the strings as single-handedly as he does. The Portuguese magician has been directly involved in 34 goals (16 goals and 18 assists) across the term – six more than any of his counterparts across the top five European leagues, as per StatmanDave. Additionally, he’s the only player to have recorded 70+ tackles and interceptions, as well as 70+ chances created.

Ruben Amorim: We’ll evaluate Fernandes’ fitness levels before Sunday

Alas, it’s safe to say he is absolutely indispensable to Ruben Amorim. But with United having to put all their focus on securing a victory in next week’s Europa League quarter-final second leg – with the scoreline currently tied at 2-2 – the boss has refused to rule out his unstoppable talisman being rested for Sunday’s clash away to Newcastle United.

“It’s an evaluation,” Amorim told reporters in his pre-match press conference this afternoon. “We’ll make this evaluation with all the staff and with all the data that we have. Then, because we know already the players, we will try to protect the ones that it will be hard to make a lot of games.

“But Bruno Fernandes is playing all the time and he’s playing better all the time. Sometimes, this kind of player has to play in every match. But we will address that in these days that we have to prepare.”
