An own goal from Jack Whatmough secured Leeds United a point at Deepdale in the Sky Bet Championship against Preston North End.

The hosts created the first opportunity of the match, Mads Frokjaer drove the hosts forward on a counter-attack, before Ali McCann fired wide from 20 yards.

Dan James made a good break down the right flank for Leeds after latching onto a through ball, but his low cross into the box was cleared for a corner with Joel Piroe lurking, before Liam Lindsay went close following a Preston free-kick, heading wide from Robbie Brady’s cross.

The hosts took the lead in the 23rd minute, Milutin Osmajic broke forwards on the break down the right and his low cross found Brad Potts at the back post, with his strike beating Illan Meslier in the Leeds goal.

Leeds had a great chance to equalize five minutes later, Sam Byram dummied past a low cross from Willy Gnonto, allowing Brenden Aaronson in at goal, however he could only put his effort over the crossbar.

Ben Whiteman, who had already been booked earlier in the match, then produced a wreckless challenge on Jayden Bogle on the edge of the Preston North End box, leading to a confrontation, however he managed to avoid a second yellow card. Instead Leeds head coach Daniel Farke was booked. From the resulting free-kick, Joe Rothwell saw his strike blocked by the wall.

On the stroke of half time, Leeds went close through Byram, he met James’ cross, but was unable to hit the target with his headed attempt.

Half time: Preston North End 1-0 Leeds United

Leeds began the second half brightly, with Joel Piroe forcing Freddie Woodman into action, with an effort from the edge of the box.

The Whites then created another good opportunity when Gnonto broke into the Preston box and his pull back found Ao Tanaka, but Woodman denied the Japan international, before Rothwell fired over.

The hosts could’ve extended their lead in the 63rd minute, Frokjaer's cross found substitute Emil Riss who headed at goal with his first touch, but Meslier was equal to it.

Leeds had another fabulous chance to pull level when James got to the byline and broke into the Preston box, but substitute Patrick Bamford was unable to turn home from close range.

With 16 minutes of regular time remaining, Leeds were inches away from equalising, with James striking from the edge of the box and his deflected effort hitting the crossbar.

Substitute Largie Ramazani was next to force Woodman into another good stop as the Whites continued to pile on the pressure.

Woodman again denied Leeds when Joseph saw a strike from the edge of the box well saved, but there was no stopping Leeds in the final seconds. James' low ball was flicked on by Joseph and Whatmough sent the ball into his own net, causing wild scenes in the away end and secure Farke's men a valuable point.
