Leeds United Under-18s begin their FA Youth Cup campaign with a trip to the south coast to face Portsmouth Under-18s, with action from Fratton Park getting underway at 7pm on Monday evening.
The prestigious tournament was a fruitful one for Rob Etherington’s young Whites last season, where the side reached the final at the Etihad Stadium, backed by over 6,500 travelling supporters.
Early victories on the road over Norwich City and Brighton & Hove Albion kick-started the memorable run, before Leeds took the derby day bragging rights over Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United on penalties at Bramall Lane.
A quarter-final bout with Liverpool would follow where a superb display brought a 3-1 win under the Elland Road lights, before a frantic and thrilling 4-3 semi-final triumph over Millwall booked the Whites’ spot in the final.
Portsmouth will offer a stern test for United, with Pompey currently sat ninth in the Youth Alliance South standings having picked up five wins from 10 league matches so far this campaign. Last time out however, Portsmouth fell to a 4-1 defeat away at Swindon Town.
Action from Fratton Park gets underway at 7pm.
