Malick Fofana, one of Lyon’s brightest emerging talents, has added fuel to growing transfer speculation after being pictured in a Marcus Rashford Manchester United shirt. The 19-year-old shared an Instagram story during off-season training, donning the 2022-23 green third strip associated with United—a post that has not gone unnoticed among Premier League clubs.
Fofana had already attracted attention from Liverpool and Chelsea following an impressive season in Ligue 1. Now, Manchester United fans—and potentially their recruitment team—are paying closer attention to the teenager who once tormented their back line in a dramatic Europa League tie.
Lyon’s confirmed relegation to Ligue 2 due to financial breaches has placed several of their top talents in the shop window. Fofana, who registered 11 goals and five assists last term, is among those widely tipped for a move. With the club facing urgent revenue challenges, key assets are expected to be moved on—and quickly.
Both Liverpool and Chelsea have reportedly made early moves for the Belgian-born winger, whose versatility and direct style have made him one of the most exciting prospects in France. For clubs looking to reinforce wide areas with youth and potential resale value, Fofana represents a high-upside investment.

The image of Fofana training in a Rashford shirt has prompted intrigue at Old Trafford, especially given the context. Just days earlier, United’s Alejandro Garnacho faced online backlash after appearing in an Aston Villa kit featuring Rashford’s name—ironically drawing attention back to the England forward.
The coincidence has only amplified discussion. While there’s no formal link between Fofana and Manchester United yet, sources close to the situation suggest that Erik ten Hag’s camp is well aware of his availability and growing Premier League interest. Given Fofana’s past performance against United—most notably winning a penalty in a pulsating 5-4 defeat—it’s no surprise the club has been linked.
The trajectory now seems clear. Fofana is unlikely to remain in Ligue 2, and with Lyon’s financial demands decreasing under relegation pressure, a deal may be reached below his expected market value. Liverpool and Chelsea, both of whom are refining their recruitment models to favour youth with elite potential, appear the most advanced in their interest.
Still, Manchester United could yet enter the race. With manager Ruben Amorim known for favouring dynamic, quick wide players, Fofana’s profile fits the brief. His public admiration for Rashford—whether coincidental or intentional—has further stirred debate about his destination.
As pre-season draws near, the question is less about if Fofana will move and more about where he’ll land. For now, one Instagram story has been enough to ignite a full-blown transfer watch across England’s top clubs.
