PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma (25) could not continue Les Parisiens‘ away Ligue 1 clash against Monaco after suffering a horror facial injury from Monaco’s Wilfried Singo’s (23) studs-up collision. The Ivory Coast international attempted a shot at goal when the Italy international parried away his effort. Singo then tried to jump over Donnarumma, but his foot smashed the former Milan keeper in the face.
Considering the extent of Donnarumma’s spectacular injury, and the fact Singo was already on a yellow, French international referee François Letexier raised many eyebrows in opting not to give the former Torino centre-back his marching orders. According to L’Equipe, Letexier – who oversaw the 2024 Champions League final – considered that Singo’s fault stemmed from a “reckless” but not “inconsiderate” behavior, according to IFAB’s Laws of the Game.
Letexire therefore adjudged that Singo did not act “with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent” and did not “exceed the necessary use of force or endanger the safety of an opponent.” PSG eventually won 4-2 courtesy of Désiré Doué, Gonçalo Ramos and a brace from Ousmane Dembélé.
