As reported by AS, Xabi Alonso is currently playing a waiting game as he observes the recent developments surrounding Carlo Ancelotti’s future at Real Madrid.
The former Real Madrid midfielder is the club’s top choice to succeed Ancelotti, but the outlet mentions that until the Italian’s fate is decided, Alonso is holding back from taking any significant steps.
Real Madrid’s shock exit from the UEFA Champions League has cast doubt on Ancelotti’s future with the club, and it seems increasingly likely that this will be his last season in charge.
As a result, Alonso, who has quickly gained recognition for his work at Bayer Leverkusen, has emerged as the favourite to take over the reins at the Bernabeu.
Interestingly, while Alonso is being strongly considered by the club’s hierarchy, he has made it clear that he will not act until the situation with Ancelotti is resolved.
Furthermore, it must be noted that there is a mutual understanding between Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen that the German club will not stand in his way if a major opportunity, such as Real Madrid, comes calling.
Leverkusen, however, have made it clear that if Alonso were to leave, a release fee of approximately €15-20 million would be involved, though Real Madrid may try to negotiate a lower amount.
Alonso is aware that he remains the prime candidate to replace Ancelotti if the current manager departs, with Jurgen Klopp also being mentioned as a potential option.
For now, Alonso is in a holding pattern, staying focused on his work with Leverkusen, but waiting for the decision regarding Ancelotti’s future.
As we near the end of the season, all eyes will be on Real Madrid as they make a crucial decision about the manager’s position. Alonso’s patience could soon pay off, but for now, he remains in limbo, ready to step up if the opportunity arises.
