The UEFA executive committee announced today that they will increase the size of team squads from 23 to 26 players for the upcoming summer EURO.

This decision aligns with the recommendations made by the National Team Competitions Committee, which supported the change in a vote held on April 22.

As a result of the expansion, all 26 players will now be included on the matchday team sheet.

In line with competition rules, teams must submit a list of at least 23 players and no more than 26 to UEFA by the deadline on June 7.

It is to be noted that the increase in squad size was initially implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as coaches were concerned that virus outbreaks might leave them with insufficient players for games.

Although UEFA had initially planned to revert to the traditional 23-player squads for this summer’s event, several national team coaches advocated for maintaining the larger squads due to the high rate of player injuries this season.

What does it mean for Real Madrid?

This development may increase Real Madrid’s representation in the upcoming continental event, as players like Ferland Mendy (France), Nacho, and Lucas Vazquez (Spain) could be selected to play for their respective national teams.

So far, no team has officially announced their squad lists, as they are still waiting for the current season to progress.

Notably, Mendy may find himself in France’s squad due to the absence of PSG defender Lucas Hernandez, who will miss Euro 2024 after undergoing surgery for a torn ACL.

Hernandez sustained the injury during the Champions League semifinal first leg against Borussia Dortmund, which PSG lost 1-0 in Germany.

As for Nacho and Vazquez, the Spanish duo has shown how reliable they can be in big matches for Real Madrid this season.
