Rangers won’t get Ibrox back till mid-September – official

It has been confirmed, officially, that Rangers will not return to Ibrox until the middle of September at the earliest after the SFA and Rangers revealed Hampden has been secured as Rangers’ home venue until an initial 5th of September, with potential scope for extension if required.

With the Ibrox Stadium debacle well-documented, this article is not for whining about what is or what isn’t, just about reporting the facts, and Rangers secured a lease on Hampden for the whole of August into September, without any guarantee work will be complete in Govan, meaning there’s insurance for Rangers’ temporary residence at Scotland’s national stadium to continue beyond the allotted date.

The agreement was reached after weeks of negotiation – there had been tentative overtures made in the direction of Scottish Rugby with a testing of the waters about making the national rugby stadium Murrayfield the temporary home instead.

Rangers will of course play there this week to face English goliath Manchester United in what the club hope will bring in some much-needed revenue from ticket sales – all ticketing profit comes back to the club, but of course the ‘rental’ price on Murrayfield (and Hampden) does mean the profit margin is reduced a speck – we just can’t be sure how much by.

We’ve seen financial experts making guesswork into how much the costs v profit actually are, but without anyone knowing the exact numbers, it’s just plucking numbers out of the air.

And we’ve not even factored in the known cost (around £1M) or relaying the Hampden pitch for SPL football. All on Rangers’ burden.

But for now, we know at least that this will last, minimally, at least around another 7 weeks. We just can’t know for sure Ibrox will be ready after the 5th so it could be considerably longer.

It’s not an ideal start to the season for the club, that’s for sure, with Rangers unable to count on the home Ibrox crowd for support.

Albeit the atmosphere at Ibrox in recent times wasn’t the best as it was…
