There is a growing curiosity around Rangers signing a lot of players from Bournemouth and it is one that raises questions about recruitment patterns at Ibrox. The club appears to have formed a surprising link with the south coast Premier League outfit over the years and this connection is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. From Jermain Defoe to the more recent arrivals of Joe Rothwell and Max Aarons and now potential interest in Wales international David Brooks the pattern is clear. Rangers signing a lot of players from Bournemouth is not just a coincidence anymore and fans are beginning to wonder what lies behind it.
Back in the Steven Gerrard era the club made a statement by securing the services of Jermain Defoe who came with Premier League pedigree and a strong relationship with the manager. While that move paid dividends on and off the pitch it did not appear to be the start of a Bournemouth pipeline. Yet in hindsight it may have laid the foundation for what is now a regular occurrence. Rangers signing a lot of players from Bournemouth now feels like a recurring strategy with the club clearly seeing value in talent that has come through or been associated with the Cherries.
Max Aarons is the standout example of that trend this summer. A high profile full back who failed to hit top gear at Bournemouth he has nonetheless been seen as a major coup for Rangers and is expected to slot straight in as the club’s first choice right back. His arrival was swiftly followed by Joe Rothwell a creative midfielder with a decent CV and Premier League experience. Both players have arrived with some expectation and will be key figures under Russell Martin. That is two Bournemouth players signed in the same window and if reports are to be believed a third in David Brooks could well follow.
Brooks is an interesting case. A talented winger who has played for his country and starred in the English top flight his career has been disrupted by illness and inconsistency. But at his best he is a strong option on the flanks and would add depth and quality to the Rangers squad. It is no surprise then that the Ibrox side are keeping close tabs on him. If he does make the move north that would be three players in one summer window from the same club. In addition to Defoe’s historic link it cements the idea that Rangers signing a lot of players from Bournemouth is no fluke.
There could be several explanations for this unusual trend. Perhaps there are shared agents or intermediaries who have smoothed these moves. Perhaps Bournemouth’s playing style under certain managers is aligned with what Rangers are trying to do. Or perhaps it is simply a case of players at Bournemouth falling out of favour and Rangers being quick to pounce. Whatever the reason it is a fascinating subplot to this summer’s transfer window and one that will continue to draw attention as the deals pile up.
Rangers are not strangers to tapping into the English market but the specific focus on one club is a little out of the ordinary. It may turn out to be inspired if Aarons Rothwell and potentially Brooks all shine at Ibrox. Or it may lead to scrutiny if the moves fail to deliver on their promise. Either way it is a story that is not going away and fans will keep a close eye on developments. The next few weeks could add another twist to this curious transfer tale.
