The London is Blue podcast are taking a look at Chelsea’s squad depth for the season ahead, and have made some interesting conclusions about our attacking options.
Presenter Brandon Busbee is convinced that new signing Joao Pedro is going to be the main man, even ahead of fellow summer addition Liam Delap.

“Two seasons ago, Joao Pedro scored 20 goals and got 3 assists, for Brighton. Last season he got 10 goals, 7 assists. What we’ve seen immediately at the Club World Cup just surprised me – how quickly he got off and running. We don’t want to get too excited too early, but the expectation is – this was definitely the signing they wanted as a Premier League proven striker, young… even over Liam Delap. So he’s going to get the majority of chances, especially early in the season, so it’s going to be up to him to score.”
In the Premier League, Joao Pedro managed 19 goals and 9 assists in two seasons. Could he beat that in one year at Chelsea? It would be a huge feat, but not impossible if the team are really good this year.
You can see him make his point in the video embedded here:
On the evidence of the Club World Cup, it’s hard to disagree with that. Joao Pedro was brought into the first team even just days after signing. One can only imagine that a period training with the team will have cemented that first choice status further. Delap ended up being second choice, used off the bench, with Nicolas Jackson relegated to third choice.
When the season starts, we think it will be JP will be the main man, and the other two competing to come on later in games. If the Brazil star gets his account open early, he could soon be set to smash his Premier League goals record.
