Our Premier League awards honour the best – and worst – of the latest top-flight action.
After a wait of more that two decades, Portman Road is finally celebrating a top-flight win. Ipswich Town upset Chelsea to win their first home game since promotion, as goals from Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson sealed a famous victory.
Christian Walton, in just his third league appearance since promotion from League One, was outstanding in goal, while Delap underlined his status as one of the best forward prospects in the division.
Kieran McKenna’s team remain in the bottom three but an important win leaves them just a point from safety. Onwards and upwards for the Tractor Boys? They can take huge confidence from this.
Manchester City have faced criticism for the sale of several names in recent windows, with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers among those thriving in rival colours.
Is Liam Delap the next name that will cause regret at the Etihad. The 21-year-old was sold to Ipswich in the summer after a series of modest loan moves in the second tier.
He has hit the ground running, however, emerging as one of the breakout stars of the Premier League campaign. Delap scored his seventh goal of the season and created the second for Omari Hutchinson, as Ipswich beat Chelsea at Portman Road. No played aged 21 or under has scored more top-flight goals this season, while only Ollie Watkins (8) has managed more among English forwards.
Thomas Tuchel will be keeping a close eye on his development, with Delap unplayable at times. His powerful running and ability to stretch backlines has offered Ipswich a much needed outlet. This was a complete centre-forward display from a player of real potential.
Manager of the Week
Take a bow, Nuno Espirito Santo.
When Nottingham Forest hung on to their Premier League status a matter of months ago, few envisaged the Tricky Trees would end 2024 on this high. Five consecutive wins in the Premier League for the first time since 1995 has lifted Forest up to second.
It’s dreamland for the club’s supporters, daring to dream of European nights returning to the City Ground. Their 2-0 win over Everton was the latest polished performance from a team well coached and full of confidence.
A brilliant, brilliant Brighton goal.
The Seagulls drew 2-2 at Aston Villa in a hugely entertaining encounter that saw Tariq Lamptey rescue the visitors a point. Lamptey started and finished a move that included fine work from Kaoru Mitoma and Joao Pedro, with the right-back’s thumping effort a fitting conclusion.
An honourable mention for Eberechi Eze.
The midfielder has had a slow start to the season by his standards but a fantastic hit for Crystal Palace’s winner at Southampton was a reminder of his quality. It’s one defeat in eight for Oliver Glasner’s improving side.
Could Manchester United be relegated?
It’s perhaps unthinkable but the numbers make for grim reading. Defeat to Newcastle was their sixth in December across all competitions, the club’s highest since 1930. They’ve also conceded 18 goals in the month, the most in a single month for 64 years.
Four teams previously have been relegated having sat in 14th place at the turn of the year…
