Real Madrid are the undisputed kings of European football with a ridiculous 15 Champions League/European Cups to their name.

On this day in 2017, they landed their 12th, and made some post-1992 history in the process.

Real had ended their agonising 12-year wait for "La Décima" in 2014 under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti, which kickstarted a golden era for the club not seen since their 1950s heyday.

Atlético de Madrid were beaten again in 2016, this time with Zinedine Zidane at the helm, and the following year, they became the first side in the Champions League era to win back-to-back titles, and the first since Milan in 1989 and 1990.

Juventus were the unfortunate to side to come up against a vintage Real side led by Cristiano Ronaldo, who netted twice in the Welsh capital in a dominant 4-1 victory.

Mario Mandžukić's first-half equaliser was the goal of the game, and maybe the season, but it mattered little as the Old Lady suffered yet another final loss.

Zidane would make it three-in-a-row the following year, before Ancelotti returned to tie his protégé with Real Champions League titles with wins in 2022 in 2024.

Will Xabi Alonso follow in their footsteps in the coming years?
