It had been coming, and FC Barcelona have now officially stripped Marc-Andre Ter Stegen of captaincy and named Ronald Araujo as his successor.

Things between the German goalkeeper and the club have not been going good in recent days. The player had refused to sign a medical document that Barcelona wanted to submit to La Liga.

Just a day later, Barcelona have opened disciplinary proceedings against their former captain. The club has also taken a strong decision by taking the armband away from him.

Here is what the official club statement reads:

“FC Barcelona hereby announces that, following the disciplinary proceedings opened against player Marc-André ter Stegen, and until this matter is definitively resolved, the club, by mutual agreement with the Sporting Direction and the coaching staff, has decided to temporarily withdraw his role as first-team captain.”

The club also announced that Ronald Araujo would be taking over from him for the time being:

“During this period, the duties of first captain will be assumed by the current vice-captain, Ronald Araujo.”

Things have officially gotten ugly between Barcelona and Ter Stegen. Yes, the German goalkeeper is acting out in bad faith and does not deserve to be the club’s captain anymore.

On the other hand, one would also have to say that Barcelona should not have found themselves in a position where they are so desperate for Ter Stegen’s signature to register a new player.

In the end, things have turned very sour between the two parties. It is very obvious that the German international will not play a single minute for the club, ever again.

Let’s wait and see how the two parties end up reaching an amicable solution, if one exists.
