New York City FC head coach Nick Cushing believed that his team "should have got something" in their 1-0 defeat to FC Cincinnati.

It's been a difficult start to the season for Cushing and NYCFC with just one win in five games played. While it may have been an improved performance from the Boys in Blue last weekend against the reigning Supporters' Shield champions, Cushing's seat is definitely starting to warm up fast in a results-driven business.

The box score also shows that NYCFC were only better than Cincinnati in possession with 54%. Outside of that, the hosts outmatched the visitors in xG, shots, and shots on target - which can't really be disputed when your team has lost four out of their five games to start the season.

"I've said this all along. I know the spirit and the desire the group has, and I know the quality level that is improving and almost the level that the team can bring," Cushing said.

"We came here (TQL Stadium) last year, and we were well beaten, and we came not getting anything tonight - (we) could have got something or should have got something. We'll work through that. You know, we'll work through whether we could have gotten something or whether we definitely should have. We'll look through the video, we'll look through the tape."

Even though Cushing, who has one MLS Cup and Campeones Cup to his name with NYCFC, is no doubt under tons of pressure, he was still proud of how his team fought despite missing several players in this month's international window.

"I couldn't be (more) proud of the guys. We play through an international window where we lose six of our guys. We lose two guys that are important to us when we're (already) thin. We have no (real) recognized striker on the roster today to pick from. So to come to a difficult place like this and take the game and be in the game (all the way) to the end, I think it's a testament to where we are in our process. That we came off the field today and in the locker room, the players, they're disappointed that we didn't get something today because we were in the game and (it was) close," he said.

Cushing still stood firmly though in his assertion that NYCFC should've taken something from the contest against the Orange and Blue.

"We're disappointed we didn't get anything and ultimately we have to decide whether we should have gotten something or whether we could have, and I think we should have gotten something because we had two or three really good looks," said Cushing.

The Boys in Blue will hope to change their fortunes and get back in the win column when they take on Inter Miami this Saturday at Chase Stadium.
