Newcastle United have submitted a €30 million bid for AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw, according to Calciomercato.
Milan are open to selling Thiaw this summer despite Massimiliano Allegri’s preference to keep a player who still has two years left on his current deal at the San Siro.
Thiaw was a regular for Milan last season but has been linked with various clubs this summer.
Crystal Palace and Como have also been touted as suitors, with the latter agreeing a deal with Milan before Thiaw opted against a move.
Magpies manager Eddie Howe is reportedly an admirer of Thiaw’s athleticism, composure and versatility, viewing him as a long-term successor to Fabian Schar in the heart of the backline.
Newcastle’s interest in Thiaw is longstanding, having been linked to the 23-year-old in previous transfer windows, but their pursuit has now intensified with an official offer.
Milan have not yet given a response to Newcastle. They are currently focused on finalising the acquisition of Swiss midfielder Ardon Jashari after a lengthy saga with Club Brugge.
Newcastle will be eager to get a deal for Thiaw over the line as they prepare for yet another transfer heartbreak with Benjamin Sesko on the verge of joining Manchester United.
The Magpies still have plenty of issues to sort out with less than one month left before the window closes, meaning that time is increasingly of the essence at St James’ Park.
