Anthony Gordon's second goal of the season earned Newcastle United a 1-1 draw with Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

Gordon stepped up to send Ederson the wrong way from the spot just before the hour after being felled by the Brazilian goalkeeper, cancelling out Joško Gvardiol's first half opener at St. James' Park in an entertaining encounter.

Gordon's leveller means Eddie Howe's side have now scored in their last 22 top flight outings at home - an impressive run stretching back to the 2022/23 season.

The hosts began brightly, and had the best of the play in the first half without making it count. Kieran Trippier had a sight of goal when Sandro Tonali - on his first Premier League start of the campaign - picked him out on the right, but Jack Grealish threw himself in the way of the full back's shot.

The Magpies defender was in the thick of the action, clearing bravely and in a timely fashion at the far post as Erling Haaland loomed, but with ten minutes of the half left Grealish rounded Trippier on the left and played in Gvardiol, who cut inside and dispatched a shot low beyond Nick Pope, with the help of a slight deflection off Tonali.

It was a tidy opener from the visitors but United could have been level before the break, when Trippier's free kick found its way to Joelinton in the box. The Brazilian's first touch was exquisite and his left-footed drive was a powerful one, but it was beaten away by Ederson in the City goal.

Ten minutes after the restart, Ederson was the central figure in Newcastle's leveller. Gordon was sent one-on-one by Bruno Guimarães' superb through ball which sliced through the City backline, and then went to round Ederson, who brought him down. After a brief VAR check, Jarred Gillett stuck with his initial decision to award the spot kick, and Gordon stepped up to fire home the equaliser at the Leazes End.

The hosts were again in the ascendancy after that goal, and could have made it two shortly after. Joelinton could have won another penalty when Gvardiol bundled him over as he looked to shoot, and Harvey Barnes had a fleeting sight of goal when Tonali threaded one through for him, but Ederson smothered the winger's dinked effort from a tight angle.

There were a couple of warning signs for Howe's men even as they continued to push, with substitute Phil Foden finding space in the area and seeing his low strike kept out by Pope, while United replacement Sean Longstaff whipped a Jacob Murphy delivery just past the upright at the other end.

And in stoppage time, Newcastle were indebted to Pope as he produced a wonderful one-handed stop to keep out Bernardo Silva's venomous volley to preserve a well-earned point on Tyneside for those in black and white, who rise to fifth in the table ahead of next weekend's trip to Everton.
