Newcastle United are in the market for a striker to back-up Alexander Isak, and one of the options they are considering is Brentford man Yoane Wissa.
According to the Daily Mail, a close eye should be kept on the Wissa situation because the 28-year-old Brentford forward has admirers within St James’ Park.
The Magpies recently announced the departure of Callum Wilson following his five-year stint at Tyneside, and they need a replacement for the England international.
The replacement should be a reliable deputy to Isak, capable of taking the mantle when the Swede is sidelined. Newcastle’s transfer radar has landed on Wissa.
Wissa is a Premier League-proven marksman who bagged 19 goals and four assists in 35 league appearances for the Bees this term. He scored 12 times last term.
While his partner Bryan Mbeumo got most of the plaudits, it is worth noting that they were a fantastic duo, as manager Thomas Frank highlighted.
The Magpies will be better off signing Wissa than Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with whom they have been linked recently.
Wissa is better than Calvert-Lewin, who managed only three league goals this season and missed 16 big chances.
His numbers last term were not much better (seven goals, 16 big chances squandered again).
Wissa may cost big money, and the Newcastle hierarchy will think twice about paying so much for a player who turns 29 in September when Calvert-Lewin costs nothing.
However, Wissa’s profile is perfect for the duty. He also has a reputation for making an impact from the bench, which makes him a brilliant pick-up if Newcastle can get it done.
Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins is another target for Newcastle, but it is unlikely he will be okay with a second-string role.
