Michael Edwards has unfinished business

Edwards, of course, tried to complete a lot of signings as Liverpool sporting director that never went through. The Reds actually hoped to bring in some of the world's best - but didn't have the standing at the time to get them done.

But he also tried to bring in plenty of young talents before they hit it big. Liverpool haven't been particularly strong with this over the years, sitting in between being a club who can guarantee first-team football and one who can guarantee success.

It's why they failed to sign the likes of Rodrygo Goes before he went to Real Madrid, despite a strong push to do so.

Edwards, though, plainly hasn't given up. Federico Chiesa arrived back in August for instance - someone he'd pushed hard for years ago, before the Italian moved to Juventus.

Liverpool couldn't get a deal done then but found a way to get one done now. It's something he also hoped to make happen with Alexander Isak.

Edwards was at the helm when the Reds tried to snap him up all the way back in 2016. Isak was only 17 at the time and would instead join Borussia Dortmund a year later.

A deal for Isak wasn't possible this year, either. Newcastle United secured UEFA Champions League football, eliminating any possible reason why they'd sell their star player.

But it does appear Edwards will find success with Florian Wirtz. That's another player he hoped to bring to Anfield a long time ago.

Liverpool pushed for his signing back in 2020 before he signed for Bayer Leverkusen. Anfield Watch understands they then tried again in 2021 but the Germans wanted €50m for their wonderkid.

Edwards maintained contact, though, and then breathed new life into the deal once he moved back into the Liverpool fold last year. That appears to have worked a treat as the club close in on a record transfer for Wirtz.

So will there be more to come? Very possibly. Liverpool's standing, both in reputation and financially, has opened the door to many transfers that previously weren't possible.
