Liverpool's 'stunning statement' to the rest of the Premier League is reaching levels we didn't think possible. What a summer at Anfield.
Liverpool won the Premier League title this season in what was a shock to everyone, quite honestly. The Reds were a little off it in 2023/24 and then lost Jurgen Klopp.
In came a new manager, with new ideas - and just one new signing in Federico Chiesa. The Italian was a last-minute budget signing and one who's barely played this season.
Despite it all, Liverpool won the title and won it comfortably. It was a surprise, then, to learn that they're not at all happy with the squad.
Anfield Watch revealed back in February that Liverpool planned to overhaul their entire attack this summer. Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota are all on the chopping block if the right offer comes in.
And that's an incredible statement to the rest of the Premier League. Liverpool won the title at a canter and then turned around to tell everyone that this wasn't good enough, actually.
We called it a 'stunning statement' a few months ago. But we never saw it being this good.
When we heard that Liverpool wanted to overhaul their attack, we assumed it was more along the lines of finding forwards who fit Arne Slot's plan a bit better. Not necessarily superstars - sensible signings that improved the squad through a plan, rather than being miles better.
We suggested things like Liam Delap and Jonathan David. Two really solid strikers who tick the right boxes, have had Liverpool interested in the past, and could arrive for a combined £30m.
Only, Liverpool have made that idea look completely ridiculous by moving for Florian Wirtz. It turns out that an 'overhaul' does actually mean finding a genuine superstar to build it all around.
The Reds look likely to smash the English transfer record to get him. We really, really did not see that coming - no one did.
But the mad thing is that Liverpool aren't even stopping there. Jeremie Frimpong has already arrived and Milos Kerkez is expected to be the new left-back.
