A race to the wire and so many twists and turns.

For some time now it had looked a three way contest between Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle United.

These most recent results though having a major impact on how the Premier League top six chase now looks…

Saturday 27 April – Manchester United 1 Burnley 1

Saturday 27 AprilNewcastle United 5 Sheff Utd 1

Saturday 27 April – Aston Villa 2 Chelsea 2

Thursday 2 May – Chelsea 2 Tottenham 0

Saturday 4 May – Burnley 1 Newcastle 4

Sunday 5 May – Chelsea 5 West Ham 0

Monday 6 May – Crystal Palace 4 Manchester United 0

This is now the updated Premier League table on Tuesday (7 May 2024) morning:

As you can see, Manchester United now eighth in the Premier League behind Newcastle United and Chelsea in the table, with each club having three games each left to play.

Man U though absolutely battered last night at Palace, their players appearing to just give up and jogging around the pitch, whilst their defence was a total shambles. Palace could and should have put seven or eight past them, such was their superiority.

Listed below are the now updated general Premier League odds available from the various bookies to finish top six this 2023/24 season (in brackets what the odds were on 12 April):

11/4 Chelsea (5/1)

8/1 Manchester United (4/5)

So Newcastle United now very much favourites in the eyes of bookies and punters, with Chelsea making it a two horse race and now Manchester United pretty much seen as no-hopers, due to a combination of their recent form and the tough fixtures they have remaining. Starting with title chasing Arsenal on Sunday!

See below the eight Premier League matches that will decide things for the three clubs…

These are all the remaining fixtures for the three clubs fighting for Premier League top six:

Saturday 11 May – Newcastle v Brighton, Forest v Chelsea

Sunday 12 May – Man U v Arsenal

Wednesday 15 May – Man U v Newcastle, Brighton v Chelsea

Sunday 19 May – Brentford v Newcastle, Brighton v Man U, Chelsea v Bournemouth

It is a simple equation, if Newcastle United win their last three matches, then they are guaranteed sixth place.

Whilst a draw for Newcastle at Old Trafford and getting a win and a draw in the other two matches would ensure finishing ahead of Ten Hag’s side.

Due to their goal difference superiority over Chelsea, Newcastle would almost certainly finish above Pochettino’s team if getting a draw and two wins from these Brighton, Man U and Brentford matches.
