The Belgium youth international wore No91 throughout his time at Royal Antwerp and that was also his shirt number at Club Brugge upon being promoted to the senior squad.

At international level, Lammens has worn a mixture of No1 and No12 for the Belgium youth sides. Those options are currently taken by Altay Bayindir and Tyrell Malacia at Man United, meaning the 23-year-old has had to settle for No31.

This particular shirt number had been vacant at Old Trafford since 2023 when Jack Butland and Martin Dubravka both had short stints with it as they acted as back-up options to David de Gea.

Nemanja Matic, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Marouane Fellaini are previous owners of the Man United No31 shirt along with the likes of academy players such as Darren Fletcher, Corry Evans and John Curtis.

Lammens sealed an £18million move to Man Utd on transfer Deadline Day, signing a five-year contract to become the club’s fourth major arrival of the summer after Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

Described by director of football Jason Wilcox as “an excellent young goalkeeper with great potential”, Lammens has told supporters exactly what to expect from him.

He said: “I’m quite all-round, I take pride in that. Of course, you have working points that you can improve at everything.

“I like to play from the back also with the team, at my feet. I like to help the team with controlling the space behind the defence, helping my defenders. And, of course, if you want to be a top goalkeeper at this level, you have to be a good shot-stopper, so I think I’m an all-round [keeper].

“I can improve also and I’m already eager to start training and improving so that I can take the next step.

“I watched a lot of football growing up. My inspirations when I got older and became a goalkeeper were Manuel Neuer or Thibaut Courtois, the same nationality, so you look up to them a lot.”
