Yesterday, a report from Fabrizio Romano emerged that stated that a host of Bundesliga and Premier League clubs had an interest in signing Nico O’Reilly this summer. It was further reported by Romano that the interested clubs were prepared to offer O’Reilly regular first-team opportunities to entice him to leave Manchester City. Nico O’Reilly was arguably the shining light of Manchester City’s efforts late last season. There would seemingly be little merit to the notion of the City letting O’Reilly leave, given his tremendous ability, size, and athleticism.

Two new reports indicate that Manchester City will not let Nico O’Reilly leave the club this summer. It would now seem that the issue is put to bed. How Nico O’Reilly is utilised by Pep Guardiola this season will be worth tracking across the season.

How Nico O’Reilly is utilised this season will be of great interest.

There would appear to be no chance of Manchester City letting Nico O’Reilly leave the club this summer. That is for the best given what O’Reilly adds to Pep Guardiola’s squad. Midfielders with the size and technical ability of O’Reilly are hard to come by. Now that City have one they are determined not to let the young midfielder slip through their fingers.

Last season Nico O’Reilly impressed at left-back during the latter stages of last season. It’s a credit to O’Reilly how well he embraced that role in a struggling City side. His match-winning effort against Bournemouth in City’s FA Cup quarter-final win was particularly memorable. As was his goal in Manchester City’s 2-nil win over Everton at Goodison Park. That win and O’Reilly’s goal were crucial to City securing Champions League qualification for next season.

Perhaps Nico O’Reilly will provide cover for Rayan Ait-Nouri at left-back next season. Ideally, he’d be given the opportunity to impress in midfield. As of right now, Manchester City’s midfield is stacked with talent. But O’Reilly has the talent and potential to force his way into that particular equation. If he could do exactly that next season Manchester City will have a powerful weapon at their disposal. Wherever O’Reilly is utilised next season will be of great interest. Now that he reportedly won’t be leaving City this summer his development as a player will be one of many storylines to watch for next season.
