One player who has emerged as a potential transfer target for Manchester City is Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki. Mike McGrath reported for the Telegraph earlier this week that Manchester City had joined the race to sign the talented attacking midfielder. On his day, Cherki can be unplayable. But there are question marks that surround his defensive workrate.
Mike McGrath also reports that Cherki could be available this summer for a transfer fee of between £20-25 million. At that price, the mercurial French attacking midfielder could be a gamble in the transfer market that Manchester City may take. Now a new report indicates that could be a move that City are willing to pursue. Manchester City’s potential move for the Lyon playmaker may now be a story to watch develop over the coming weeks.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Manchester City have made contact to start initial talks to sign Rayan Cherki this summer. Furthermore, Romano reports that the talented young French under-21 international is one of Manchester City’s summer transfer targets for the vacant number 10 role. Lastly, Romano adds that Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White is also on City’s list.
It would now appear that Manchester City are quickly getting to work in the summer transfer window. There are a plethora of areas of Pep Guardiola’s squad that need regenerating or rebuilding. Manchester City’s midfield is one of those areas. It seems that City’s move for AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders is coming together. The Dutch international would add exactly what Pep Guardiola’s squad need in the number eight position. There is a need for Manchester City to sign a number ten or a creative midfielder who plays in a variety of roles across City’s frontline. Rayan Cherki is that type of player.
Based on Fabrizio Romano’s new report it seems that Manchester City are pressing ahead with a move for one of the most talented young playmakers in Europe. Signing Rayan Cherki would be a risk based on the obvious weaknesses in his game that exist out of possession. But if any manager could address those issues it’s Pep Guardiola. Perhaps the Manchester City hierarchy feels the same, as they seem poised to move for a player who would fill an obvious void in the City squad. It now appears that after completing a deal with AC Milan for Tijjani Reijnders Manchester City could move for Rayan Cherki. That is an exciting development in what looms as a crucial summer for Manchester City.
