Barcelona’s plans to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia have hit a serious obstacle, as according to SPORT, Manchester City have now entered the race for the 24-year-old, threatening to derail Barça’s hopes of landing one of their top summer targets.

Garcia has been closely followed by Barcelona for months, especially with the club looking to strengthen their goalkeeping department for the future.

Newcastle United were also in the picture but have now pulled out, which briefly gave Barcelona a boost. However, Manchester City’s interest has come at the worst possible time for the Catalans.

City, led by Pep Guardiola, are exploring options in goal due to the growing uncertainty around Ederson’s future.

The Brazilian goalkeeper has strong offers from Saudi Arabia, and City’s backup option, Stefan Ortega, could also be tempted by a move.

With both under contract until 2026, the situation is not urgent, but City want to stay ahead of the curve and Joan Garcia fits the profile.

Garica yet to decide as pressure mounts

On Thursday, Garcia met with his agent in a restaurant in Barcelona to discuss his next move. The meeting ended without any final decision.

It is to be noted that the goalkeeper has a €25 million release clause, and interest from multiple clubs has left him with a lot to consider.

The 24-year-old wants to involve his family in the decision and plans to take a few more days to analyse all offers carefully. A final decision is expected at the start of next week.

While Barcelona remain interested, Manchester City’s entry has made things far more complicated.

The Espanyol keeper is in demand, and unless Barça move fast and confidently, they risk losing out on a player they’ve been tracking for months.
