Officials at Manchester City have been working behind-the-scenes on potentially launching a €60 million offer for a new goalkeeper this summer, according to reports.
The future of Ederson remains unresolved amid growing pressure from Galatasaray, while Stefan Ortega Moreno also harbours ambitions of becoming a No.1 elsewhere if not at Manchester City this season.
The club’s goalkeeper department, one of the most settled in recent years, is now in a state of flux — and Manchester City’s recruitment operation is preparing for swift action in response, having also recruited Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea as a new third-choice option.
Diogo Costa has been a long-standing name on City’s radar. The FC Porto and Portugal international has been monitored for several months, with the 25-year-old’s shot-stopping quality, distribution range, and composure under pressure making him a standout candidate.
The appointment of Hugo Viana as Manchester City’s new Sporting Director has only added fuel to the fire. Viana’s close familiarity with Portuguese football — and FC Porto’s internal workings — as well as super agent Jorge Mendes is expected to streamline any negotiations.
Though the player remains tied to a €75 million release clause in the Portuguese city of Porto, the willingness of Manchester City to move swiftly could help push through a deal at a lower sum.
According to the information of Maisfutebol’s Bruno Andrade and Sergio Pires, City have began working ‘in the last few hours’ on the possibility of advancing forward a proposal for FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
Following a behind-the-scenes inquiry into the Portuguese goalkeeper, it is detailed that City officials have now begun to formulate the amount they intend to offer Porto, which is said to be worth in the region of €60 million, potentially with variables included.
It is further explained that Manchester City are aiming to work swiftly in the market having learned this week that PSG are now at risk of losing Gianluigi Donnarumma, as such creating the possibility of Diogo Costa emerging as a replacement for the French giants.
Manchester City’s appointment of Sporting Director Hugo Viana has only naturally fuelled an increase in interest when it comes to Costa in recent months, with the 25-year-old having just two seasons left on his contract and remains protected by a €75 million release clause.
While Costa appears to be a primary target for City should they need a new No.1 this summer, club officials are also keeping a close eye on Academy graduate James Trafford, with the Burnley goalkeeper having already given the green light to a potential return to the Etihad Stadium, pending a financial agreement between the two clubs.
City retain a £40 million buy-back clause on Trafford following his 2023 exit to Turf Moor, but are currently in discussions to try and lower that figure. Crucially, any move hinges on movement within their existing goalkeeping ranks.
Should City lose both of their senior stoppers, the door could open to a double reinforcement strategy. In this particular scenario, Diogo Costa would likely arrive as the new No.1, with Trafford potentially acting as an ideal long-term back-up – a player who understands the demands of Pep Guardiola and still holds high development upside.
