Manchester United Push for Emiliano Martinez as Ruben Amorim Shapes Squad

Manchester United are wasting no time in the transfer market this summer, with their sights firmly set on Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. According to a report from TeamTalk, United are readying a £33 million bid for the Argentina international, despite Villa valuing him at £40 million. It’s understood that Martinez is “open to the transfer” and sees it as “a significant step in his club career”.

Following a torrid 2024/25 campaign, where United slumped to 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham, new manager Ruben Amorim has been tasked with spearheading a major rebuild. So far, Matheus Cunha, Diego Leon and Enzo Kana-Biyik have arrived at Old Trafford, but Amorim is far from done.

Martinez: A Trophy-Laden Career

Martinez’s CV speaks for itself. The 32-year-old was named The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper in both 2022 and 2024, and has lifted the World Cup and two Copa Americas with Argentina. As TeamTalk’s report highlights, Martinez is an “express request from Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim”, underlining the Portuguese coach’s determination to bring in an elite shot-stopper.

The move would mark a fresh chapter for Martinez, who has already enjoyed a successful spell at Villa, but now feels the time is right to seek a new challenge. As reported by La Nacion, while United attempted to sign Martinez two years ago, then-manager Erik ten Hag opted for Andre Onana instead. Fast-forward to now, and Amorim appears “determined to finalise the deal”.

Onana Stays, but Faces Uncertain Role

Interestingly, Andre Onana’s future at United has taken a twist. While earlier in the summer AS Monaco showed interest, Onana himself wants to stay at Old Trafford. TeamTalk’s Rudy Galetti reported that “the chances of Onana staying at Man Utd beyond the end of the summer transfer window are growing stronger day by day”.

Onana’s relationship with Amorim has reportedly improved, presenting the manager with a dilemma. If Martinez arrives as expected, Amorim will need to navigate a delicate balancing act between two high-profile goalkeepers. For now, all signs point to Onana staying and potentially fighting for his place.

Amorim’s Rebuild Takes Shape

Beyond Martinez, United are also in pursuit of Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo, as Amorim looks to strengthen his attacking options. Bringing in a new number nine is also firmly on the agenda. The new manager is determined to reshape the squad in his image after a dismal season that left fans demanding answers.

As Amorim himself has acknowledged, the time for excuses is over. With Sir Jim Ratcliffe overseeing the sporting side of the club, Amorim has the backing to pursue top targets. The summer rebuild is a clear signal of intent.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

As a Manchester United fan, this report has me buzzing with excitement. After a painful season that saw us finish 15th, it is clear Ruben Amorim is not here to tinker — he is here to transform. Emiliano Martinez would be a sensational signing. He is a proven winner, a leader, and exactly the type of personality we need at Old Trafford.

Martinez’s passion and mentality are infectious. Who can forget his penalty shootout heroics for Argentina? Bringing that energy into our dressing room could lift everyone. Some might worry about Onana, but honestly, competition is what top clubs thrive on. Onana has improved under Amorim, and having two elite keepers can only push standards higher.

What excites me most is seeing a manager with a clear plan. Amorim has come in, identified weaknesses, and is targeting players he believes fit his system. Mbeumo on the wing, a new striker, and now Martinez between the posts — this feels like the start of something special.

We, as United fans, have craved a rebuild with purpose. With Amorim at the helm, backed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, it finally looks like the club are on the right track. I cannot wait to see Martinez lift trophies at Old Trafford.
