Manchester United are racing ahead to complete the transfer of Bayern Munich centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.

Last week, The Peoples Person relayed that Man United were considering the Dutch defender as a possible alternative to Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite should his potential transfer fall through.

Since then, United appear to have been gravitating increasingly toward De Ligt, with Bayern reportedly setting an asking price of €70 million for the 24 year old, thus signalling a willingness to part ways with him.

Yesterday, further evidence emerged suggesting that De Ligt’s transfer to United could be closer than one thinks as reports suggested that the player already told the Bavarian club that he wants to leave.

This is allegedly due to the fact that De Ligt did not enjoy life under manager Thomas Tuchel. What’s more, the German club appears set to sign Hiroki Ito, as well as Jonathan Tah, suggesting the Dutch international could struggle to get more game time next season.

It was further mentioned that talks have already taken place with several Premier League clubs, with United among them.

Last night, United’s interest in the player was confirmed by journalist Florian Plettenberg.

“We’ve been told that Manchester United have opened talks about Matthijs de Ligt on player‘s side now,” Plettenberg posted on X. “Understand that #MUFC have gathered more information about the 24 y/o in recent days as he can leave Bayern with a suitable offer as revealed. De Ligt, ready to leave Bayern and open to join ManUtd as he will not become the central defender No. 4 or 5. Still no contact between the clubs yet,” the post continued.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed this with an X post of his own.

“Manchester United made contact with Matthijs de Ligt’s camp as he’s one of the options being considered as new CB — including Branthwaite. De Ligt, open to joining United even with no UCL football. Bayern could sell de Ligt this summer, up to Man United decision,” Romano stated.

The Telegraph added that while United have not yet made contact with Bayern, they do indeed appear to be on the move. Furthermore, the newspaper claimed that United are expected to pay significantly less than the £65 million fee Bayern paid for the player when signing him from Juventus in 2022.

While De Ligt could indeed bolster United’s defensive options next season, it is worth noting his injury issues in recent times, which could be a cause for concern for an injury-ridden club.
