Liverpool have paid Newcastle £125million for Isak, with solidarity payments taking the total figure to £130m, breaking the British transfer record potentially twice in the same window if the add-ons are met in their initial £100m deal for Florian Wirtz to take it up to £116m.

Chelsea’s deal for Moises Caicedo two summers ago may end up costing £115m, while the Blues also paid £107m to sign Enzo Fernandez in January 2023.

Newcastle rejected an opening bid for Isak last month worth £110m plus add-ons, though the Swede has always wanted the move and has been training away from the squad in addition to not playing for Eddie Howe’s side this season, releasing a statement on social media - refuted by Newcastle - that accused the club of breaking promises made to him.

The deal became far more likely after the Magpies - who missed out to Manchester United on Benjamin Sesko - were able to bring in German forward Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart in a club-record deal worth up to £69m on Saturday, with Brentford’s Yoane Wissa expected to follow on Deadline Day for £55m.

Isak said: “I feel amazing. It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.

“I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well.

“I want to win everything. Yeah, [as simple as that].”

Isak initially joined Newcastle from LaLiga side Real Sociedad for a then-club record £63m in summer 2022, having previously played for Borussia Dortmund and AIK.

He made 109 appearances across all competitions in total for the club, scoring 62 goals - including 27 last season. Isak also has 16 goals in 52 senior international caps for Sweden.

The 25-year-old is the most high-profile arrival of a stunning summer transfer window on Merseyside that has seen Liverpool spend more than £400m on bolstering Arne Slot’s squad that won the Premier League title last season.

He will compete for a starting berth up front with fellow new signing Hugo Ekitike, who has scored three times in four games since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt for £69m in July.

Liverpool have signed Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman, but they missed out on signing England defender Marc Guehi for £35m from Crystal Palace on Deadline Day.
