Liverpool’s stellar start to the season is more than just a performance statement; it’s also an urgent reminder of what could be lost if contract discussions falter with three of the club’s cornerstones—Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. All three players have not only defined the club’s recent golden era but are integral to Liverpool’s continued momentum. With contracts set to expire at the season’s end, their futures hang in the balance, leaving Liverpool supporters and management anxious about the ramifications.
As Micah Richards highlighted on BBC’s Match of the Day, “They have got to sign Mo Salah up; it is imperative they give him a two-year deal. He doesn’t have to play well to score goals and have big moments.” It’s a sentiment echoed by former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who sees this trio as essential to the club’s ongoing success: “They are all legendary figures at that club, and it’s probably down to them this season why it has gone so well.”

While Arne Slot’s Liverpool have been formidable, much of the team’s strength still revolves around these three key players. Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold have been pillars, whether through Salah’s clinical finishing, Van Dijk’s defensive leadership, or Alexander-Arnold’s creativity from the back. Liverpool have won 13 out of their 15 matches under Slot, a testament to how well this trio continues to perform.
Salah’s impact is particularly noteworthy. Scoring 220 goals in 364 appearances, he sits fifth on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list and is just eight goals short of club legend Billy Liddell. Saturday’s match against Brighton saw Salah again displaying his goal-scoring prowess with a curling effort into the far corner, Slot noting, “A Mo Salah special… it’s not the first and not the last time he will score from that position.”
Van Dijk, since his arrival from Southampton in 2018, has brought consistency and solidity to Liverpool’s backline. Now the club’s captain, his influence on the pitch is unmistakable. In games where he has played alongside Salah and Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool have achieved a 70% win rate, underscoring the synergy these three bring to the team. Without him, that number drops to 52%.
Alexander-Arnold’s contributions are just as critical. As Liverpool’s homegrown talent, he has emerged as one of Europe’s top right-backs, creating 59 Premier League assists since his debut and amassing a tally of 10 or more goals and assists in five different seasons. His vision, set-piece expertise, and influence have drawn interest from Real Madrid, especially given the recent ACL injury to their right-back Dani Carvajal. As Carragher notes, the right-back position could be Liverpool’s biggest vulnerability should Alexander-Arnold decide to move.
The reality of these players entering contract crunch time has stirred speculation on possible destinations. Salah has long been linked with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia, where the league’s financial might could tempt him to conclude his career. Liverpool previously rejected a £150 million bid for him, but Saudi interest remains strong, and the player himself has been clear about his long-term ambitions. However, many fans are optimistic he will stay, especially with records in sight—both at the club and in the Premier League. For Salah, remaining at Liverpool is a chance to break records and secure a legacy as one of the club’s all-time greats.
Van Dijk, now in his early thirties, faces the prospect of what might be his last significant contract. As a leader in defence and a fan favourite, he’s expected to stay, with Carragher commenting, “I’m pretty confident that the two older lads will sign. They are probably at the stage of their careers where it is difficult to move to a better club than Liverpool.” Liverpool’s reliance on his composure and experience means he could be more inclined to sign, extending his captaincy and presence as a steadying influence.
Alexander-Arnold, in contrast, may have more options on the table, with Real Madrid’s interest a potential game-changer. Recently, he spoke of his ambition to win individual honours such as the Ballon d’Or, signalling a strong personal drive. This aspiration, coupled with Real Madrid’s need for a right-back, could become an influential factor in his decision. While Liverpool supporters hope for his commitment to the club, Alexander-Arnold’s unique situation may make him the most likely to leave if a deal doesn’t materialise.
With Klopp’s departure at the end of last season and Slot’s new regime kicking off strongly, Liverpool’s future identity could hinge on these negotiations. Losing even one of these players would be a significant challenge, but losing all three would be a seismic shift. Their continued presence not only strengthens the current team but also keeps Liverpool’s championship ambitions alive.
Slot himself appears unfazed by the uncertainty, expressing confidence in the players’ current form and professionalism. As he mentioned, “At the moment all three of them are in a good place, all of them perform really, really, really well.” Slot’s words reflect the attitude many Liverpool fans are clinging to—that the allure of Liverpool’s competitive edge will be enough to keep these icons in red. The general sentiment among the fanbase is that while Salah and Van Dijk are expected to extend their tenure, Alexander-Arnold may be tempted by Real Madrid’s interest.
Yet, for Liverpool to maintain their status as one of England’s elite clubs, these contract extensions are crucial. The longevity and reliability of the team rest on keeping these players, who embody the club’s ethos of relentless pursuit of excellence.
With crunch time approaching, Liverpool’s management has a challenging task ahead. Securing new deals with Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold would not only bolster the team’s future but would also send a powerful message to rivals and supporters alike—that Liverpool are here to stay at the top.
