Liverpool are planning for next season with Jarell Quansah as a key part of their squad, despite Newcastle United making a play for him, according to The Athletic.

The 22-year-old was on Newcastle’s transfer radar last summer, but Liverpool made it clear they had no intention of selling him.

Newcastle are reportedly planning another move this summer. However, the Reds remain resolute, with manager Arne Slot planning for next season with the young centre-back.

With captain Virgil Van Dijk likely to leave this summer, Liverpool will not be keen on letting other defenders walk away when the transfer window opens.

The highly-rated defender enjoyed a breakout season at Anfield last term, deputising for the oft-injured Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez.

He has continued developing this season, making 22 appearances in all competitions.

His performances also earned him a call-up to the England squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He did not feature against Albania and Latvia.

Newcastle’s initial approach for Quansah was rebuffed last June. The Magpies immediately switched focus to Gomez but could not get a deal over the line.

Newcastle valued Quansah at around £50 million last summer. He has since signed a long-term contract, committing to the club until 2029 and making a deal difficult.

The Magpies may have to turn to other options as they search for defensive reinforcements.

Bournemouth starlet Dean Huijsen reportedly has a £50 million release clause. However, Newcastle face competition from Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid.
