Liverpool’s reported interest in Hugo Ekitike has excited fans, and for good reason. The Eintracht Frankfurt striker is one of the brightest young forwards in Europe. Quick, powerful and technically gifted, Ekitike’s 15‑goal Bundesliga season has shown just how high his ceiling could be. At just 22, he has time on his side and is said to be holding off on a Chelsea move in the hope that Liverpool formalise their interest.
Still, while his potential is clear, the £84million price tag feels excessive. Liverpool are heading into a crucial phase of their summer plans under Arne Slot and must be careful in choosing their next centre-forward.

Ekitike’s situation mirrors that of Darwin Nunez when he joined from Benfica. Nunez arrived with a big reputation and huge promise but has struggled to consistently deliver. With his departure now expected, Liverpool need more than potential in their next striker. They need someone who can lead the line with authority, convert chances and deliver under pressure from day one.

Liverpool’s attack will soon feature Florian Wirtz, the club’s record signing, who thrives when surrounded by intelligent movement and sharp finishing. To get the best out of Wirtz, Liverpool must have a true number nine, someone reliable in front of goal. Ekitike could become that player, but there is no guarantee he will adapt quickly to the demands of the Premier League.
At £84million, Ekitike is not just a signing for the future, he would be expected to deliver immediately. That expectation feels risky given his relative inexperience at the top level. If Liverpool can negotiate a lower fee or find a more proven option, it may serve the club better in what is shaping up to be a high-stakes season.
Ekitike is an outstanding young striker, but this might not be the time to take another gamble.
