Johan Bakayoko: Liverpool’s Potential Transfer Game-Changer

It feels like last summers forward rumour reincarnated but here we are. As the summer transfer window edges closer, the buzz around potential big moves is starting to heat up. Johan Bakayoko, the young sensation from PSV Eindhoven, has been closely linked with a move to Liverpool again, a development that could potentially excite fans at Anfield. It’s one of those that’s possible but wouldn’t excite too many against others who’ve been mentioned

What’s Been Said

A report from Belgian publication HLN.BE has started that “Liverpool are in the running to sign the PSV superstar Johan Bakayoko this summer.” The Dutch club is reportedly seeking a fee of over €50m for the 21-year-old, aiming to break their transfer fee record. The potential of Bakayoko wearing a Liverpool shirt is stirring up considerable excitement amongst some in the fanbase, highlighting the club’s intent to bolster their attacking options as per David Ornstein’s recent report.

Looking at the Key Stats

Johan Bakayoko has shown impressive form in the Eredivisie. Standing 1.79m tall and playing primarily as a right winger, Bakayoko has racked up 46 appearances for PSV in all competitions this season, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists. His performance on the international stage is equally promising, with a recent debut for the Belgium national team. His market value, according to Transfermarkt, stands at a robust €40m, reflecting his rising stock in European football.

Comparisons With a Great

When placed side-by-side with Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s current right-wing maestro, Bakayoko presents an intriguing prospect. Salah, in the current season, has played 30 matches for Liverpool, netting 18 goals with 13 assists. Statistically, Salah leads with a higher xG (expected goals) of 14.4 compared to Bakayoko’s 8.6, and also boasts more touches in the opposition box, indicating his superior positioning and finishing skills. However, Bakayoko’s youth and raw potential can’t be ignored and whilst the league he plays in is ultimately poor, his ball carrying numbers are extraordinary and he possess that xG and xAG dual threat.

Likelihood and Fee

The likelihood of Bakayoko’s transfer seems more plausible given PSV’s willingness to negotiate for a record fee. His current contract runs until June 2026, and with a market value pegged at €40m, Liverpool might need to offer something substantial to secure his services. As for wages, Bakayoko’s transition from the Eredivisie to the Premier League would likely see a significant increment, aligning with Liverpool’s financial framework for star acquisitions.

The issue comes that there looks potentially better options on the market in that area. Additionally, it’s almost impossible to discuss Bakayoko without using the phrase Eredivisie tax. He’s one we’ll be profiling on transfer market metrics in the near future too. It wouldn’t be any surprise if he’s on the list but don’t be at all shocked if he’s not near the top of it.
