Lille co-owner Alessandro Barnaba has reiterated the club’s hopes of tying Jonathan David down to a new contract amid Inter Milan links.
During his latest interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, as reported by FCInterNews, Barnaba revealed the club’s stance on their talismanic striker.
Jonathan David has gone from strength to strength since swapping Gent for Lille in the summer of 2020.
Over the past four years, he has become one of the most highly-rated goal-getters in Europe, let alone France.
Indeed, he has been phenomenal this season.
The 24-year-old has tallied 12 goals from 17 competitive appearances, including seven in ten league matches.
Therefore, the French giants keep the Canada international in high regard.
However, his deal at Stade Pierre-Mauroy runs out at the end of the campaign.
Meanwhile, Inter president Beppe Marotta is keeping close tabs on the situation.
Lille will go above and beyond to keep hold of David.
“We are working on a renewal,” Barnaba said.
“David is very strong, underrated in Europe because he’s atypical and reserved.
“He’s a forward who fits perfectly with coaches who play modern football where everyone has to defend and attack.”
Despite Lille’s ambitions, there’s a feeling David will leave France in the summer.
Inter are ready to pounce, but they’re not the only Italian club in the race for David’s signature.
AC Milan and Juventus are also in the mix.
Indeed, Milan tried to sign David last summer but to no avail.
As for Juventus, they’ve identified the Lille star as a perfect replacement for Dusan Vlahovic.
Juve sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli is a big-time admirer of David.
Considering the player’s contractual wobble, the Turin giants are on red alert.
Therefore, Inter will have to move swiftly if they’re to win the race.
