FLW's Leicester City Fan Pundit has identified two targets that the club should look to bring in before deadline day
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Leicester City have only made one signing so far this summer window - 38-year-old Asmir Begovic on a free transfer who arrives in the East Midlands after leaving Everton.
It still remains to be seen if a points deduction is going to fall the way of the Foxes after they were charged with an alleged breach of the EFL's financial rules in May.
With this in mind, we asked FLW's Leicester City Fan Pundit, Louchlainn Martin, to identify two realistic targets that the club should look to bring in before deadline day on the 1st of September.
Martin's first choice is former Burnley captain Josh Brownhill. The midfielder officially became a free agent in July after confirming his departure from Burnley following their promotion to the Premier League.
"The first one is Josh Brownhill. Now, some would say it’s not realistic because there’s Premier League clubs after him, I disagree just on the basis that he turned down a contract at Burnley in the Premier League," Martin explained.
His optimism appears well-founded given Leicester's reported interest in the 29-year-old. According to FourFourTwo, the East Midlands outfit have tabled a contract offer to Brownhill.
"The rumours have it that Leicester City have offered him a contract, if he was to accept that I think it would be a good, low risk signing, a free agent. Wages could be an issue of course so that’s why I’m kind of 50/50 on it but I do think we need another midfielder," Martin added.
The midfielder scored an impressive 18 goals and provided six assists in 42 second-tier appearances last season, helping the Clarets achieve automatic promotion.
Leicester's need for midfield reinforcement adds weight to Martin's suggestion. The Fan Pundit mentioned the potential departures that could leave the squad thin in the middle of the park.
"We could lose Harry Winks, we could lose Boubakary Soumare, between now and the end of the window. So, because of that I do think we need one more midfielder through the door, and I think Josh Brownhill at Championship level is proven and he’s very good," he said.
Soumare was apparently supposed to be leaving the club at the end of last season, according to Sky Sports Switzerland.
Martin's second suggestion is considerably more adventurous - Swedish striker Jusef Erabi from Hammarby. The 22-year-old forward was described as "a bit of a rogue shout", but is backed up well.
The connection between the two stems from Erabi playing under Cifuentes during the manager's stint at Hammarby, where the Spaniard guided them to third place in the Allsvenskan Europa Conference League qualification.
"He is a striker that’s worked under Marti Cifuentes previously, at Hammerby. I think he fits the system Marti Cifuentes is going to play very well, he’s good with his feet, he’s good at dropping deep, he’s good at kind of rotated positions. They’re all ticks for Marti Cifuentes’ system," Martin explained.
The Stockholm-born forward has scored 29 goals in 96 appearances for Hammarby - with four of those coming this season.
"He’s valued at somewhere between £5m and £10m. Obviously, if it's at the higher range of that then you know it could become unrealistic, but if we can get him for £5m or £6m I don’t think that's too unrealistic.
"I think especially if we make more sales this summer, a striker should be the priority, and Patson Daka’s linked with a move away from the club - and if that does happen then we definitely do need to bring another one in," Martin concluded.
However, the September 1st deadline provides limited time for Leicester to act on either suggestion, but at least the club seem to be in a good place for the race to sign Brownhill.
Whether Cifuentes can reunite with his former striker remains to be seen, but Martin's reasoning does suggest Leicester could do with adding to the Begovic signing as soon as possible.
