Huddersfield Town owner could save millions if Lee Grant can unlock Joe Taylor's proven goalscoring ability
Huddersfield Town owner Kevin Nagle invested heavily in striker Joe Taylor, and the Terriers could save millions if new manager Lee Grant can unlock Taylor's proven goalscoring ability.
The American owner has revealed that the club is expected to report losses of between £15m - £20m - almost half of what they would be allowed over a three-year period under EFL regulations.
With the EFL's financial sustainability rules limiting League One clubs to spending 60% of their revenue on players and salaries, or sustaining up to £42m in losses over three years, every transfer decision is tough.
So the reported £3m investment in Taylor therefore represents a big commitment from Nagle - money that needs to provide a return in terms of goals and ultimately promotion.
Taylor's stats from his loan spells tell the story of a natural finisher who thrives in England's lower leagues.
During his time at Lincoln City in the second half of the 2023/2024 season, the Welshman netted 10 goals in just 19 League One appearances.
This wasn't a flash in the pan either - earlier that same season at Colchester United in League Two, he had scored 11 goals in 25 outings.
The 22-year-old's prowess was perhaps best exemplified by his League One Player of the Month award for March 2024 while at the Imps. During that month alone, Taylor scored six goals and provided a backheel assist, helping Lincoln record an impressive 17 goals throughout the period.
The appointment of Lee Grant as Huddersfield Town's new manager brings a coach with specific expertise in developing forwards and attacking players - even though he played professionally as a goalkeeper.
During his three years as first-team coach at Ipswich Town, Grant specialised as a forwards coach - which meant he worked closely with the attacking talents during the clubs back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League.
Grant's background as a number one does provide him with unique insights into how to trouble opposition keepers and create scoring opportunities. This knowledge could prove invaluable in getting the best out of Taylor's potential - which is proven to be there.
The new Huddersfield manager has made it clear that his team will play an aggressive, proactive style of football. In his first interview after being appointed, Grant said, "We'll be a proactive team. We'll be a dominant team and we'll be an aggressive team."
This approach - focusing on taking the game to opponents and creating numerous attacking opportunities - could provide Taylor with the service and chances he needs to replicate his impressive lower-league form.
Grant's coaching philosophy extends beyond tactics to player development, and he has stated his commitment to helping players improve, "I'm here to help players be better. I'm here to help players develop and grow."
For Kevin Nagle, the maths is simple. If Grant can transform Taylor into the prolific striker his stats suggest he can be, it saves the club from needing to invest further millions in additional attacking options.
The stage is set for Grant to prove that good coaching can be as valuable as expensive signings - and for Taylor to show that League One defenders should fear the spark that could be lit up soon at the John Smith's Stadium.
