The time is coming when Manchester City will have to rebuild their midfield. In my opinion that is arguably City’s biggest need in next summer’s transfer window. There is also an argument to be made that City’s midfield could do with fresh legs this season. But that’s a separate issue. Now a new report indicates that the world champions have their eyes on a double swoop for Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz next summer. Whether or not Manchester City can land both remains to be seen. But if they could land one of the German internationals next summer it would help with the regeneration of their midfield.
Pete O’Rourke has reported for Football Insider that Manchester City are plotting deals for Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. Furthermore, O’Rourke adds that world champions believe either or both players could be potential replacements for Kevin De Bruyne. O’Rourke adds to his report that of the two a Manchester City move for Jamal Musiala appears more likely to come off than a move for Florian Wirtz. It is added by O’Rourke that Bayern Munich are considered the favourites to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen next summer.
If Manchester City did land both Wirtz and Musiala, it would kick-start the regeneration of their midfield. The pair are two of the premier young playmakers in world football. But being realistic that particular scenario may not come to fruition. Landing one of Wirtz or Musiala would also be a massive win for the world champions.
The time is coming when Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Mateo Kovacic and Ilkay Gundogan will need to be replaced. The quartet are all over 30 years of age and have been warriors for the champions. But time waits for no one or no player. Signing one of Wirtz or Musiala would give the champions a premier young player to rebuild their midfield around. Both Musiala and Wirtz are proven performers who both likely have their best years in front of them. They are players in the ideal age range to regenerate City’s midfield. The hope is that City could sign at least one of them next summer.
Pete O’Rourke’s report indicates that City have set their sights high for next summer’s transfer window. Landing both of Wirtz and Musiala would be a massive signal of intent from the club. But if they could land just one of them that would be a huge boost for Manchester City. It remains to be seen if City could do just that next summer.
