Liverpool fans will want to forget about the calamity of a performance on Saturday.
Optimism was high and Arne Slot’s men had started the season wonderfully, however the game at Anfield last weekend was a harsh reminder that anything can happen in the Premier League.
And now one former Liverpool legend has said that he could see this loss coming for the Reds.
Writing for The Liverpool Echo, John Aldridge has stated that he could “smell things were going wrong for Liverpool.”
Within the article, Aldridge says:
“Saturday was a right kick in the proverbials for Liverpool. But they can’t afford to mope about it now – they need a reaction. We just were nowhere near good enough. When one player doesn’t do well you can carry that, and two players sometimes.
"But when 60% aren’t at their level, then you are going to struggle.”
The former striker's opinions were harsh and he did not hold back on the performances of certain players:
“Mohamed Salah had what was surely one of his worst games ever for the club. Cody Gakpo barely kicked the ball and Darwin Nunez was well off it. They didn’t appear ready and weren’t sharp.”
The loss is a big concern. It’s hard to see teams like Manchester City and Arsenal dropping points in games like these, and if we want to compete for the title we need to step up the intensity.
The Reds legend also highlighted in his article the need for change. “Slot hasn’t done much rotation so far but that is now going to change. It’s not as if the rest of the squad shouldn’t be considered. They are all really good players.”
Aldridge’s analysis is in line with many supporters who think players such as Wataru Endo should be getting more game time to add more defensive stability.
Liverpool need to react and prove a point. They have the perfect opportunity to do that tonight when Slot’s men face AC Milan in the opening Champions League game.
