FLW's Hull City Fan Pundit believes the Tigers should consider selling Abu Kamara if Portsmouth follow through with their reported interest
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Abu Kamara's first season in the Championship with Hull City has certainly been underwhelming, with the winger managing just five goals and three assists in 38 league appearances.
Hull finished 21st in the Championship, narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day with a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth - ironically Kamara's former club.
These numbers represent a huge drop-off from his time spent on loan at Portsmouth - albeit in League One at the time - he averaged a goal or assist every 2.6 games compared to about 4.8 games with the Tigers.
According to the Hull Daily Mail, Pompey are reportedly keen on reuniting with their former loanee, who played a big role in their League One title win - he scored ten goals and provided 11 assists during his season-long loan at Fratton Park.
FLW's Hull City Fan Pundit, Cameron Gibson, believes the Tigers should consider selling Abu Kamara if Portsmouth follow through with their reported interest.
"He hasn’t exactly stepped up to the Championship, in my opinion, from what he’s shown at Portsmouth in that incredible loan spell," Gibson stated. "There are glimpses of quality, but for me, when I watch him play, I do think he has a lot to learn. He’s nowhere near the finished article, he’s still developing, and he does need time."
"For £4.5m when things are starting to get a bit tight and the finances aren’t as free there anymore, if a decent offer was to come in for Kamara, I would suspect the club would look at it and I would definitely be looking to sell if it was in the region of £3m and cut a little bit of a loss on him."
Gibson highlighted specific concerns about Kamara's attacking play, noting: "For too long I’ve seen him not go on the outside, and he fears beating the defender on occasions, too often, in my opinion, he is decisive and creative in the box. His work rate is also there for everyone to see he does work hard, but again, for the price we paid, I don’t think he’s lived up to expectations."
Gibson also referenced a telling moment from that final day of the season: "The final day of the season when all the players were celebrating with the fans staying up, Kamara was away from the team clapping the Portsmouth fans, which, for me, showed the possibility that he might want to move on and move back to Portsmouth."
Rather than persevering with Kamara, Gibson suggested Hull should pursue alternative targets: "I would much rather see a Joe Gelhardt, for example, signed for maybe £2m or £3m if that’s what Leeds are going to want this summer."
Gelhardt spent the second half of the 2024/2025 season on loan at Hull and matched Kamara's goal tally in 16 fewer appearances - and has reportedly had his asking price reduced from £8m by Leeds.
The appointment of Sergej Jakirovic as Hull's new head coach adds another layer of uncertainty to Kamara's future.
Gibson questioned whether the winger would fit the new manager's system: "It all depends on the manager as well. Is Kamara going to be a Jakirovic-style player, is he going to get along with the manager?"
With Hull undergoing another period of transition under new management, the coming weeks will perhaps prove vital in determining whether Kamara gets another opportunity to prove his worth at the MKM Stadium or if Pompey will succeed in their pursuit of a reunion.
