Leicester City may need to pay a lower compensation fee to land Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.
Leicester City would reportedly have to pay a lower compensation fee of just £1 million if they appoint Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl as their new manager.
Leicester are preparing for life back in the Championship after suffering relegation from the Premier League following a dismal campaign in which they finished third-bottom with a total of just 25 points to their name.
Ruud van Nistelrooy won only five of his 27 games in charge of the Foxes after replacing Steve Cooper in November, drawing three and losing 19, and after weeks of speculation over the Dutchman's future, his departure was finally confirmed on Friday morning.
Leicester have been considering potential successors to van Nistelrooy for some time, and former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche is said to be keen to hold talks with the club, but there have been conflicting reports about the 53-year-old's interest in the role, with The Telegraph claiming that it is unlikely he will be taking over at the King Power Stadium.
However, Rohl is one candidate who appears to firmly be on the Foxes' radar, and according to Sky Sports, the compensation figure needed to release him from his contract at Hillsborough has been halved, with the East Midlands outfit now believed to be required to pay a fee of around £1 million for the 36-year-old.
Rohl is believed to have informed Wednesday of his desire to leave back in April, but despite being linked with a host of other clubs this summer, including Southampton, Middlesbrough, RB Leipzig, Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen, he has failed to secure a new job so far.
One of the biggest stumbling blocks for Rohl's suitors has been his high release clause, which was said to have stood at £2 million for Championship clubs and £5 million for those outside the second tier, but following negotiations with the Owls, that figure has now dropped to around £1 million.
Leicester have experienced plenty of financial issues in recent years, and a points deduction could potentially be on the cards in the Championship next season after they were charged with breaching profitability and sustainability rules by the Premier League, so the reduction in the compensation fee needed to appoint Rohl will be a welcome boost for the cash-strapped club.
It is even possible that they could avoid having to pay for Rohl altogether as he is currently believed to be in talks with Wednesday over an agreement that would see his tenure at the club come to an end, but that is unlikely, and news of van Nistelrooy's exit may see the Owls wait for the Foxes to make an approach.
If Rohl was to take over at Leicester, his first game in charge would be against his current club Wednesday, who travel to the King Power Stadium on the opening weekend of the season.
With the new Championship season just over a month away, it is essential that Leicester and Wednesday resolve their managerial situations as soon as possible, so negotiations over Rohl could now accelerate quickly between the two clubs.
Rohl has made it clear that he is keen to leave Hillsborough, so taking over at the King Power Stadium would enable him to land one of the top jobs in the Championship, while the move would also ensure that the Owls receive a compensation fee for their highly-rated manager, even if it is lower than they would have hoped at the start of the summer.
Given Wednesday's ongoing off-field issues, Rohl may feel an element of relief once his departure from the club is finalised, but Leicester are facing financial troubles of their own, and with a possible points deduction on the way, the German could be set to step into another turbulent environment.
