Liverpool are locked into talks with Bayer Leverkusen over Florian Wirtz. The Reds are now the surprise frontrunners for the German playmaker, having seen off Bayern Munich and Manchester City.

And that certainly comes as a shock. Wirtz is one of the most in-demand players in world football and everyone thought Bayern would get him.

City entering the race to find a replacement for Kevin De Bruyne made a lot of sense. Their financial power could have rivalled Bayern significantly.

And yet, somehow, Liverpool have muscled out the two giants to front the pack. This is basically unprecedented - the Reds rarely, if ever, shop in this market.

All that really remains is an agreement with Leverkusen over the fee. The Reds are in talks with the club right now and here's how that's reportedly going.

Reports have now broken, including from the Athletic, that Liverpool have offered €130m euros, including add-ons, to sign Wirtz. It's an improved second bid from the Reds but there's no sign yet of whether Leverkusen will accept.

Kicker has the details on Wirtz. They suggest Liverpool initially offered €100m plus add-ons for the star, which Leverkusen have declined.

Though, it's suggested that the offer was merely Liverpool making it clear that they're chasing the best-possible price here. This is 'the club's money', says Kicker, and they don't want to spend it needlessly.

Leverkusen have set a price of €150m but there appears to be an acceptance that the final figure will settle at around €130m. It could, though, still approach the higher end.

The key part is that Leverkusen want that as a fixed sum - not made up of potential bonus payments. It makes it a little more difficult for Liverpool but it won't be anything that surprises them.
