After months of tedious back and forth, it looks like Chelsea have finally done it.
According to Fabrizio Romano’s Tweet from this evening, the club have reached an agreement with Manchester United to sign Alejandro Garnacho.
Things had gone very quiet since the start of the season, after a deal seemed close back in June and July. But the last few days saw things ramp up quickly, and it’s now finally a done deal.
Fabrizio Romano’s Tweet about Alejandro Garnacho.
Romano has some decent detail on the price that has finally seen Chelsea and United reach common ground.
Garnacho “only wanted Chelsea,” as has been made clear to us by countless briefs since this whole saga began. He was turning down all comers to get a move to Stamford Bridge, and that probably is partly what’s behind the low price – less than £40m for a player considered among the league’s most promising, not long ago.
The other factor in that low price is that Manchester United are so openly keen to get rid of him – a red flag that some Blues are struggling to get past.
Tyrique George looks ever closer to leaving Chelsea, so it will be Garnacho competing with Jamie Gittens, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and occasionally Cole Palmer and possibly Joao Pedro for minutes out wide at Stamford Bridge. That’s tough competition, but there are a lot of games to be played this season.
Garnacho’s familiarity with the Premier League could give him an early boost over newcomers like Gittens and Estevao – although he’ll do well to make an impact like the Brazilian has in his early weeks.
At worst this is a smart business decision – at best he could be a really good player.
