Liverpool Overcome Spurs with Elliott as Man of the Match

It very much feels like the final three games of Jürgen Klopp’s emotional Liverpool reign will encompass certain players looking to drive their performances into the mind of the incoming Anfield head coach, Arne Slot. However this season may have imploded in the final stretch of games, no single member of the Merseyside fanbase can argue the superb efforts put forth in this campaign, especially given the much-needed regeneration that started in the summer of 2023.

Some individual players were always likely to fall away from the preferred group, with injury or poor form making their long term stay uncertain. One player that can be assured about his own season and his absolute potential for what comes next, is the former Fulham prodigy, Harvey Elliott. The infectious and cheeky entertainer is fast becoming more than a late game call to arms, but more an integral part of what the support hopes will succeed.

As a lifelong red and a talented young player drenched in enthusiastic effort, the attacking midfielder has commonly been the substitute, one that was called upon to reinvigorate a flailing first team group this term. As an obvious back up to the more established duo of Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai, it did seem like the wonderfully balanced 21-year-old may be destined to remain the bridesmaid, looking in on the bride of that particular day.

This game against a normally well drilled Tottenham side, however, showed everything Liverpool’s German manager, Klopp, loves about the crowd favourite, with a beautiful assist and spectacular goal pushing him towards a landslide man of the match award. In a future system that may require three attacking assets behind a central striker next term, the often-ill-fitting wide central midfield berth of old may now be replaced by a formation designed for people like Harvey.

The intricate and sublime combination of play between himself, the Egyptian King, and Trent Alexander Arnold, was instrumental in undermining an away side which could not match the patterns of play of the home team. The float cross for Cody Gakpo was a tremendous delivery, whereas the goal was a striker of the season contender.

In this period where players may fall away from England’s reckoning, the forthcoming Europeans Championships could well be a natural next step for the under-21 star, especially if one or two more established internationals were to sustain an injury in the next few weeks.

Though this season is not the complete breakout campaign of a firm starting asset, it does push the rhetoric for next year and the clean slate that may well be presented to a raft of players within this decorated squad.

The Reds best performance today was by a young footballer that will give everything for this club, something which may see him become a regular staring piece, sooner rather than later.

Currently an untouchable quantity that has been given an opportunity to shine.

Steven Smith’s Pre-match Prediction:
