Pep Guardiola has promised that everyone at Man City will try to help Phil Foden get back to the form which saw him win Premier League Player of the Season in the last campaign.
Foden enjoyed the best season of his career last time around, with the Englishman proving decisive as City claimed a record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title.
The academy graduate’s stellar campaign was recognised as he was named the Premier League Player of the Season but following an underwhelming Euro 2024 tournament, he has been unable to replicate his previous form this season.
Asked about Foden returning to his best, Guardiola promised: “We will all try all to help him. Absolutely we will try.”
The Catalan also revealed that he has privately spoken with the English star about his struggles. Foden has just nine Premier League goal contributions this season, which is some way behind the 27 he recorded last campaign.
Unfortunately, Foden may be unable to prove himself against Crystal Palace on Saturday. City’s boss revealed: “Phil is a doubt for tomorrow. Because of the injury that he had in Old Trafford, he is a doubt.”
However his manager did come to the defence of the attacker. Guardiola continued: “If the team had played better, then he would have played better.
“So if the team plays better, the individual players are lifted. There are few players in the world that can lift a team by himself and we don’t have a few.
“So as a team we have to understand what you have to do. Defensively our spirit. Offensively our patterns that we had that in the past were always so precise and then this season we have struggled. Last game was a good example of this.
“And this is what I will try to recover in these seven games, plus the FA Cup, plus the World Cup, and of course next season.”
City are currently sixth place in the Premier League and were dumped out of the Champions League prior to the round of 16.
Evidently, Foden is not the only player that is underperforming. The Blues have scored just 57 league goals, which is low for a side that normally surpass the 90 mark.
On the attacking problems that City have faced as a team, Guardiola insisted: “It’s so simple. When you move the ball, you move the opponent. And when you move the opponent, you create spaces to attack. And when that spaces to attack are not occupied with the right players in the right positions you cannot attack good.”
