FLW's Plymouth Argyle fan pundit believes Gareth Bale's involvement could be the start of a promising rebuild for the Pilgrims
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Former Real Madrid and Wales star Gareth Bale is believed to be fronting a US takeover of League One side Plymouth Argyle.
According to the Telegraph, the five-time Champions League winner is heavily involved in a potential change of ownership at Home Park - this comes just months after fellow Galactico Luka Modric’s involvement within Swansea City was announced.
Argyle chairman Simon Hallett has spoken on his desire for investment, but confirmed in a recent update that talks from other parties have failed to become concrete.
Football League World’s Plymouth Argyle fan pundit, Luke Hodge, believes the club has huge potential that could be realised after Bale’s involvement.
“It's something that Argyle have been desperate for now for a number of years to take us to that next level," Luke told FLW.
“One thing we need to do is keep our feet firmly on the ground, because we've spent the last 18 months, two years, being told that investment was close and it only fell through a couple of weeks ago.
“There's always disappointment somewhere along the line. So, we just want to keep our feet on the floor. But in terms of investment, that is something the club desperately needs to take it to the next level.
“The foundations are there. The Green Army are phenomenal and they travel in numbers. The ground has been sold out for probably the last three years. We have the catchment area in the south west, the whole of Cornwall, Devon and above.
“I might be biased, but the club feels like a bit of a sleeping giant. I have no doubt that if we were to get to the heights of the Premier League, then we could sell out 30,000, 40,000 at Argyle week in, week out. But of course, that needs investment.
“The capacity needs to be increased, and the facilities need to improve. All of that doesn't come unless you've got a vision and money. So, we'll just have to watch these developments over the next few months and see what happens.”
The past few months have been tough for the Pilgrims. Firstly, despite an upturn in form towards the end of the season, they suffered relegation to League One.
Compounding their woes, former boss Miron Muslic departed for 2. Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04 at the end of May, leaving Argyle managerless as they prepare for life back in the third-tier.
However, the news emerging surrounding Bale’s involvement in a US takeover of the club could finally inject some positivity back into Home Park.
Under their current owner, Plymouth don’t have the finances to realistically develop into a club that aims to fight for promotion to the top-flight in years to come.
But, with potential new investment on the horizon, the possibilities could be endless for the Pilgrims.
