Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has shared his thoughts on Mikel Arteta’s ongoing quest to turn near misses into tangible success. Speaking exclusively to EPL Index, Winterburn addressed the expectations that come with heavy investment and high ambitions.
“It’s always crucial. Arteta is the manager and he knows the pressure that comes with bringing in more players and always getting close but not quite getting over the line.”
The Gunners have come within touching distance of major honours in recent seasons, but lifting that first trophy under Arteta in the current competitive climate will require resilience. As Winterburn pointed out, “That first trophy will be the biggest but also the hardest.” The sentiment underlines the weight of history and the hunger within the squad to finally convert potential into silverware.
Winning once often sparks a chain reaction, and Winterburn is convinced that Arsenal’s players understand this dynamic. “But, as I’ve said before, is as a group of players you want to win things and once you win one thing you should have that desire to go and win again.”
He added that the emotional stakes only grow with each passing season. “The excitement builds every season but if they don’t get over the line then that level of frustration also builds, but Arteta knows that.” This is not simply about one campaign, but about momentum and establishing a winning culture.
While pressure on the manager remains, there is optimism in attack. The signing of Viktor Gyokeres has stirred debate among supporters. “We’ve been craving for a striker and now we have one. There’s always going to be debates whether he is the right one or the wrong one.”

Winterburn’s take reflects the unpredictable nature of transfers. “You never know what is going to happen. Most people say 20 Premier League goals is a success and that will help move your side up the Premier League table and challenge for success.”
Supporters will be eager to see whether Gyokeres can not only hit those numbers but also deliver in crucial moments. A consistent goal scorer could be the missing piece Arsenal need to finally bridge the gap between promise and achievement.
As Arsenal navigate another season filled with expectation, the balance between progress and tangible results remains critical. The club’s recruitment has been bold, the manager’s philosophy is clear, and the squad has matured into genuine title contenders. Yet, as Winterburn’s comments remind us, the margins are fine at the top level.
One thing is certain: the hunger to win is present within the dressing room, and with a striker like Gyokeres leading the line, the ingredients for success are there. Whether Arteta can manage the pressure and turn that potential into a defining trophy will be the storyline to watch.
